getting-ready-for-your-brace

How will you know if you need braces? It may be obvious to you that you or one of your children need braces. Or your dentist may recommend that it is time for you or your child to get braces. Of course, it’s a good idea for your kids to have an orthodontic screening at age seven.

The dentist or orthodontist will take impressions of your teeth and take X-rays, before discussing the best type of braces for you. But, what about the big day itself?

You should see your dentist a few days before your appointment and have your teeth cleaned. That will save time on the day you get your braces. Your teeth will need to be plaque free, and if you don’t have them cleaned before your appointment, they will have to be cleaned on the day you get your braces.

When your teeth are ready the dentist will play a paste to your teeth and attach the brackets. Then he will install the archwires will help move your teeth into their proper positions, and attach elastic to your braces to keep the wires in place.  The process itself takes one to two hours, and it may is painless. You will feel some discomfort once they are on, and it may take a week or so to get used to wearing them.
