When you get braces, you may wear them for a period of months or for more than a year. Even though it may seem like you are going to be stuck with them for the rest of your life, at one point, the day will come when your braces are removed. But, you aren’t quite done. Our dentist, Dr. Sellke & Reily will give you a retainer to wear. Even though your braces have moved your teeth and jaw ligaments into their new positions, you need a retainer to make sure that they settle in properly. You may have to wear your retainer for a few months, or you may need to wear it every night for the rest of your life.
Retainers are very expensive to replace, and you will need to take proper care of yours. If you have a removable retainer, you will need to clean it every day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. A vinegar and water solution is best for cleaning it. Take your retainer out when you eat or play sports. You should get in the habit of carrying your retainer case in your pocket, purse, backpack or briefcase. If you wrap your retainer in a napkin while you eat, you may lose it, and pets find that retainers make great chew toys! If you have a fixed retainer, the dentist will explain how you should brush and floss it to keep it clean.
