Orthodontic treatment for children

Many of our patients at the offices of Orthodontic Specialists of Lake County are young children whose parents understand the importance of oral health. We provide orthodontic treatment for children at our offices in Antioch, Gurnee and Grayslake, IL to help your child grow into a beautiful, healthy smile and minimize any future problems with their teeth and jaws.

What is the best age for orthodontics?

The childhood and teenage years are a great time for orthodontic treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children receive their first orthodontic screening by the age of seven years. We support this recommendation and encourage you to bring your child to our office by this age so we can evaluate their need for orthodontic treatment. When we start treatment early, we can often detect and correct potential problems before they become more serious, saving you and your child time and money.

Early orthodontic treatment is advantageous because a young child’s teeth have not finished erupting; this allows us to guide their eruption and address any problems at the earliest possible stage. Whether your child needs removable or fixed appliances, early orthodontic treatment can help to:

  • Provide more room for crowded erupting teeth
  • Preserve space for teeth that have not yet erupted
  • Create facial symmetry by manipulating jaw growth
  • Reduce the possible need for tooth extraction
  • Reduce overall treatment time

Two-phase orthodontic treatment

Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized process that combines tooth straightening with physical facial changes. It’s used to maximize the opportunity to achieve the ideal healthy, functional, and aesthetic orthodontic results, and to create results that will remain stable throughout your entire life.

Phase one

Phase one treatment builds the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. During this phase, our orthodontists help the jaw develop properly to accommodate all permanent teeth and improve the way the upper and lower jaws fit together.

Receiving early treatment may prevent the removal of permanent teeth and the need for surgical procedures to realign the jaw later in life, benefiting the child greatly,

Children frequently exhibit early signs of jaw problems as they grow and develop. An upper jaw that is growing too much or is too narrow can be recognized at an early age. If children over the age of six are found to have a jaw discrepancy, they are candidates for early orthodontic treatment. If children aged eight have crowded front teeth, early treatment can help avoid the need to extract permanent teeth later.

Resting period

Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized process that combines tooth straightening with physical facial changes. It’s used to maximize the opportunity to achieve the ideal healthy, functional, and aesthetic orthodontic results, and to create results that will remain stable throughout your entire life.

Teeth are not in their final positions following the first phase of treatment. Our orthodontists will monitor the development of your teeth during the resting period to determine if some primary (baby) teeth will need to be extracted to enhance the emergence of permanent teeth.

Phase two

The goal of phase two of treatment is to ensure that each tooth has a healthy location in the mouth, where it will be in harmony with the other teeth, and with the lips, cheeks, and tongue. This phase begins when all permanent teeth have erupted and usually requires braces on all teeth. Retainers may be worn after this phase to ensure the beautiful smile does not shift after treatments have been completed.
